Less-than-container load (LCL) is a shipment that is not large enough to fill a standard cargo container.

It is grouped with other consignments for the same destination in a container at a container freight station. One container may have cargo with 2 or more shipper and cnees.

For shipments less than 10 cbm or so it is generally advisable to go with LCL unless the cargo is sensitive or expensive or haz which need special care. Although it is economic way of shipping but there are few challenges.

Longer transits. It will wait for likewise (same destination) cargo to arrive before being stuffed into container.
Clearance delays: If there are any cargo clearance delays at the border for the sister cargo then your cargo will also get delayed as the entire container is subject to scrutiny.
Pricing: Most of the times the Consolidators charge exorbitant price which eventually comes very close to booking a full 20 Feet container. The show ocean freight as zero or sometimes negative but at destination collect huge charges from cnee.
